Recurrent implantation failure (RIF) is a clinical condition being encountered withincreasing frequency thanks to the wider availability of assisted reproduction in India. The definition of RIF includes women who have had three failed in vitro fertilisation(IVF) attempts with good quality embryos.
It presents a variety of diagnostic dilemmas with the diverse variety of aetiologiesimplicated in the causation of recurrent implantation failure. The failure of embryoimplantation can be a consequence of uterine, male, or embryo factors, or the specifictype of IVF protocol. There are multiple risk factors for recurrent implantation failureincluding advanced maternal age, smoking status, elevated body mass index and stresslevels.
In this publication, we focus on the diverse aetiologies, the pathophysiology of RIF andthe current evidence based treatments available to help guide couples to successfullyachieving pregnancy in such a scenario.
